A one of a kind training facility needed a large scale refurbishment
Nital

Client: NITAL Training and Development

Projects: Large scale refurbishment of a training facility

Included: Space planning, project management, design of works

Project Duration: 5 weeks

Who's the customer?

Northamptonshire Industrial Training Association Ltd (NITAL) was established in 1969 as a charitable organisation, and has been providing first-class, accredited training ever since. Originally set up to train and develop engineers, NITAL now works with over 300 member companies, spanning 25 areas and offers 100s of employment opportunities across the Midlands region.

What was the brief?

NITAL recently invested in a new building based in Kettering, which was to become a one of a kind, and purpose-built Training Academy for those who are looking to secure an engineering Apprenticeship, offering specific specialist training for employers looking to advance the skills of their existing staff.

The building provided a vast amount of flexible space for the business to utilise and grow, however, it required some adaptation to completely meet NITAL’s needs, which included a wish list of the following:

  • Classrooms.
  • Practical learning area.
  • Kitchenette.
  • Changing rooms.
  • Storage facilities.

Alan Smith
“Cubex fully supported our development project from initial design to full project management. The time scale to complete was critical and Cubex ensured that this was achieved. I would like to thank Andy and his team for their can do attitude and professionalism throughout this project. I have and will continue to recommend their services.”

What did we propose?

After careful consideration of the space we proposed that a mezzanine be installed to make full use of the height of the building and house two classrooms. Underneath we planned the area to include a kitchenette, changing rooms and storage facility. In the remaining space on the ground floor we planned the practical learning area, which included custom-built bays and welding machines, lathes and high-performance drills for the students to operate safely.

About the project

The project was completed in October 2015, over a period of 5 weeks. The extensive team of contractors comprised of plumbers, electricians, ceiling installers, partition fitters, flooring team, Mezzanine floor fitters, decorators, carpenters, air conditioning team and ground workers.

The customer worked closely with the Cubex designer, attending our offices on two occasions to work with the designer during the design process for the machine and workshop area’s.

Before any work was started we organised a meeting for all the trade contractors in early August, to ensure everyone was aware of the project requirements and to encourage open communication within our team.

We also arranged for our H&S consultant Sphere RHSM Ltd to visit too.
